Travel by Air to Geneva:

Geneva Airport is the closest airport that is serviced by all major airlines, either directly or by code-share flights. While it is not a major hub, it has connecting flights to all major airports in Europe, such as Paris, London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, etc.

From Geneva Airport Train Station, there are direct trains to Lausanne Main Train Station, traveling time 45 - 55 minutes. There are several trains per hour (see Travel by Train to Lausanne).

Travel by Air to Zurich Airport:

An alternative to Geneva is to fly to Zurich Airport, the major Swiss Airport with more direct overseas flights. There are two direct trains from Zurich Airport to Lausanne per hour, and the train journey takes approximately 2 hours 30 minutes (see Travel by Train to Lausanne).

Travel by Train to Lausanne:

For scheduling times and electronic tickets, check the Swiss Train Schedule. The link lets you find connections from most European cities to Lausanne.

Note that on Swiss Trains, you have two travel classes, 1st and 2nd. 1st class is more comfortable, but also more expensive. 2nd class is also very adequate. Using the link above, you can print your ticket electronically (Swiss tickets only), or you can buy them at the train station. Note that the tickets are generally valid for one day only, so you need to specify at which day you want to return, in case you are buying a return ticket.

Reservations are generally not necessary on Swiss trains, except for large groups or special excursion trains (see Excursions). If you travel by train from a city outside of Switzerland to Lausanne, or leave from Lausanne by train to another country, reservations might be necessary. Your travel agent can advise you.

If you plan to travel extensively by train in Switzerland or Europe during your stay, you might want to enquire about Eurail passes.

Travel to EPFL by Public Transportation:

EPFL is served from downtown Lausanne (Lausanne-Flon) by a Metro (M1). The metro runs approximately every 10 minutes, and the travel time to EPFL is 13 minutes. From downtown Lausanne, you must take a 2 Zones ticket.
